At The Concrete Rose Project, we believe that art is one of the most powerful ways to preserve history, spark dialogue, and strengthen community. This February, that belief comes to life through Tracking The Tiger — A Marcus Garvey Story, a live stage production written by David L. Horne, Ph.D.
This intimate theatrical work explores the life, vision, and inner conflicts of Marcus Garvey, one of the most influential and complex leaders in Black history. Through dramatic storytelling and close audience engagement, Tracking The Tiger invites viewers to reflect on leadership, identity, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of ideas that challenge the status quo.
Why Marcus Garvey, Why Now
Marcus Garvey’s legacy continues to shape conversations around self-determination, unity, and global Black consciousness. Tracking The Tiger does not present Garvey as a distant historical figure, but as a living, breathing human being—grappling with conviction, opposition, and the personal cost of leadership.
At a time when many communities are revisiting questions of purpose, power, and collective responsibility, this production offers space for reflection and renewed understanding through the arts.
An Intimate Community Theater Experience
The play will be presented at the Willie Agee Playhouse, a community-centered black box theater located inside Edward Vincent Jr. Park in Inglewood (714 Warren Lane, Inglewood, CA, United States, California).
Known for its close-to-the-stage seating and welcoming atmosphere, the Willie Agee Playhouse creates a powerful setting for this story. Every seat places the audience near the performers, fostering connection, focus, and conversation—elements that are essential to a production like Tracking The Tiger.
This is theater meant to be experienced up close, where words, pauses, and emotions are fully felt.
A Playwright’s Perspective
As a scholar and storyteller, Dr. David L. Horne approaches Marcus Garvey’s story with depth, nuance, and respect for historical context. Rather than offering a simplified portrait, Tracking The Tiger presents Garvey as a fully human figure—driven by vision, challenged by opposition, and shaped by the cost of speaking boldly in his time.
The play explores themes of leadership, identity, resilience, and self-determination, asking audiences to consider what it truly means to lead, to awaken collective consciousness, and to stand firm in one’s beliefs.
