As The Concrete Rose Project continues to grow in purpose and presence, our founder WanJean remains intentional about one of the most powerful forces behind long-term impact: relationships. At the heart of every initiative is the need to connect with the leaders shaping policy, nurturing culture, and uplifting communities. One such leader is Mayor Emma Sharif of Compton, California.
Recently, WanJean had the pleasure of meeting Mayor Sharif—a pivotal moment in the journey of visibility for The Concrete Rose Project. Known for her deep roots in education, public service, and advocacy for equity in historically underserved communities, Emma Sharif has been a guiding force in Compton’s recent growth and civic revitalization.
Mayor Sharif was elected as the 19th mayor of Compton in 2021, making history as only the second woman to hold the office. With a background as a former Compton Unified School District board member and city councilwoman, her leadership has long been grounded in her commitment to education, housing, community safety, and youth development. She has dedicated her career to empowering Compton residents—especially those who have long been left out of the city’s most important conversations.
Compton holds a special place in the mission of The Concrete Rose Project. As a city with an undeniable impact on global culture through music, sports, and activism, Compton’s contributions deserve to be celebrated, preserved, and passed on. While no commitments or formal discussions were made during this encounter, Mayor Sharif’s awareness of the project and her interaction with WanJean reflect the kind of local visibility and grassroots engagement necessary to bring the Monuments Initiative to life.
This moment—captured in a photograph that speaks volumes—is a reminder that building meaningful cultural infrastructure requires more than vision. It requires proximity, mutual respect, and shared investment in the stories we honor.
As WanJean continues to engage with leaders across Los Angeles County and beyond, every handshake, conversation, and introduction adds strength to the foundation we are laying. The journey of The Concrete Rose Project is not just about what we build—it’s about who we build it with.
We look forward to more opportunities to connect with officials like Mayor Emma Sharif, who lead with heart and a bold sense of what’s possible for their cities.
Stay with us as we continue to document the people, places, and pivotal moments shaping this movement.
